CHEMICAL PEEL EDUCATION
EXACTLY WHAT IS A CHEMICAL
PEEL?
A chemical peel is a controlled burn
resulting in an accelerated form of
exfoliation treatment induced by a
chemical agent. Designed to improve
the health & overall appearance
& texture of the skin, the damaged
skin is replaced with normalized skin
as epidermal growth is stimulated
to generate new skin.
HOW WILL
MY SKIN LOOK AFTER THE PEEL?
Depending on your desired results,
your skin can look healthy & glowing,
look like sunburn or anywhere in between.
A variety of methods are used to help
determine the post peel condition
of your skin: type & strength
of the peel solution, the number of
layers applied to the skin, the amount
of pressure used during its application,
the amount of time left on the skin
& which enhancers are used.
As with mild sunburn, post peel skin
may shed or slough for approximately
2-3 days. Keep in mind that certain
medications can thin the skin, cause
excessive dryness & can affect
the outcome of the chemical peel as
well as the healing process of the
skin. It is extremely important that
you discuss ALL medications you are
taking with the skin care professional
you will be working with prior to
your first treatment.
DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER A CHEMICAL
PEEL IF YOU:
1. Plan to spend time in the sun without
sun block protection
2. Pregnant, planning to become pregnant
or lactating
3. Take high blood pressure medication
4. Receive treatment for cancer
5. Diabetic
6. Have or recently had a sunburn
7. Have an important event to attend
within 2 weeks
8. Smoke tobacco (Only very mild chemical
peels advised)
BEFORE YOU SCHEDULE YOUR CHEMICAL
PEEL
• Establish realistic goals
with your skin care professional
• Discuss your expectations
& desired results from the treatment
• Have a patch test performed
7 days prior to your treatment
• Daily prep your skin with
AHA home care products 2 weeks before
• Ensure you have not used Accutane
within 6 months of your peel
• Ensure you have not used Retin-A
4 weeks prior to your peel
• Ensure you have not used Rejuven-A,
Retinol, Renova, Tazorax, Differin,
Tretinoin or ROC products for at least
2 weeks prior to your peel
• If you are prone to cold sores
or fever blisters, it is advised you
begin a suppressive therapy program
at least 10 days prior to your first
peel
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Depending on skin health & resilience,
a series of 6 peels every 2-3 weeks
is ideal & may yield the best
cumulative results. A chemical peel
within regular, professional strength
facials is extremely beneficial as
well.
POST PEEL SKIN CARE GUIDELINES
You have just received a professional
exfoliation treatment designed to
improve skin health. Your old skin
has been peeled away and you now have
a new canvas to nourish, restore &
protect as you enter the renewal process
of your skin! Whether you have had
your very first peel or have had several,
should you have ANY questions or concerns,
call your professional skin care therapist
immediately.
THE
HEALING PHASE
In order to achieve the best possible
outcome as well as avoid any potential
post peel complications, your focus
for the next 7 days is to heal the
skin properly. Until your skin has
returned to normal, it is vital that
you strictly adhere to your post treatment
care instructions prior to returning
to your daily anti-aging home care
regimen. You will receive a post peel
kit to use after your peel which contains
the essential products necessary to
restore your skin to normal.
DO NOT
pick, peel, scrape or scratch peeled
skin as this may cause scarring.
DO NOT use any form of exfoliation
-- mechanical or chemical -- during
the first week.
DO NOT spend a prolonged period of
time in the sun to avoid hyperpigmentation.
DO NOT use a hot tub, sauna, take
very hot showers or baths; try to
avoid heat.
DO NOT go in a chlorinated swimming
pool, salty lake or ocean.
DO NOT wear tight fitting headbands
or hats for the first 24 hours after
a peel. Depending on the initial condition
of the skin, you may experience skin
sensitivity, tightness and/or dryness
similar to a mild sunburn. This is
normal, yet the peel is still successful
if you do not experience any of these
symptoms. It is advisable not to use
cosmetic makeup on Day one, however,
a light dusting of mineral powder
may be used.
Treatment Plan for Day 1: Use a minimal
number of products on the peeled skin.
Using quality products with moisturizing
properties &/or splashing the
skin with cool water is ideal. If
treatment was very aggressive, Polysporin
or Aquaphor can be initially used
only until you are able to use the
products in the post peel kit.
Day 2-3: Skin may become dryer &
tighter or begin to shed or slough
-- again, this is normal. If your
skin is very oily or acneic, more
oil &/or acne may initially surface;
this is a common occurrence &
should subside.
Treatment Plan for Days 2-3: Nourish,
Heal, Repair, Restore, Protect
Mornings: With products provided
in your post peel kit, cleanse with
the hydrating facial cleanser, nourish
with Hydrating Anti-aging Serum, protect
& moisturize with Solar Defense
Oil Free SPF, applying lightly around
eyes.
Evenings: Products provided
in your post peel kit will continue
to hydrate the skin. Cleanse with
hydrating facial cleanser, apply a
thin coat of the Hydrating Enzyme
Masque leaving it on for 10-30 minutes
to infuse skin with anti-oxidants
& minerals, rinse with lukewarm
water & follow with a pea size
amount of Hydrating Repair Crème
to face, neck & eyelids.
Days 4-7: Dry or sensitive skin continue
with the treatment plan for days 2-3;
oily/acneic skin may resume use of
mild oil control products.
Day 8 & Forward: Resume regular
home care regimen & consult with
your skin care therapist to determine
when you should have your next chemical
peel.
Day 14-30 Return for next chemical
peel!
